Terms of Service
Last updated 17 October 2026
These are the rules for using PatrolPlates. By using the site or creating an account you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it. “We” means the person who runs the site. How we handle your information is in the Privacy Policy.
What this is, and what it isn't
PatrolPlates is a fan-run list of marked and part-marked New Zealand Police vehicles. It is not run by, or connected to, New Zealand Police or any other agency.
Entries are added by members of the public and checked by reviewers. They can be wrong or out of date, and vehicles change hands and units. Don't rely on the site for anything that matters, and don't treat a plate being missing from it as proof that a vehicle isn't a Police vehicle.
Using the site
You must be 16 or over to have an account. You must not use the site, or anything you learn from it, to:
- evade, obstruct or interfere with the Police or any emergency service;
- follow, harass, intimidate or confront anyone;
- pretend to be the Police, a reviewer, or anyone else;
- break the law.
Your account
- Give a real email address and keep your password to yourself. You're responsible for what happens under your account.
- Tell us if you think someone else has used it.
- We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that is being used to put wrong or harmful entries on the list.
- You can ask us to close your account at any time.
What you can add
When you add a plate you confirm that, as far as you know, it's true and you're free to share it. Entries must be:
- marked or part-marked vehicles only. Unmarked and covert vehicles are never accepted, and reviewers will turn them down;
- vehicles you have seen, or have good reason to know are Police vehicles. No guesses and no made-up entries.
Entries must not include names of officers or drivers, VINs, owners, or where or when you saw a vehicle. Leave those out, including from the notes field.
Reviewing and taking things down
Reviewers can edit, refuse or remove any entry at any time, without notice and without giving a reason. Nothing is guaranteed to be published. If the Police, or anyone with a good reason, asks for an entry to be removed, we'll remove it promptly. The quickest way is Report This Entry on the plate's page.
Your content
You keep any rights you have in what you submit. You give us a free, non-exclusive licence to store it, edit it, and publish the facts in it as part of the list, for as long as the entry stays up.
Fair use
Please don't:
- copy the list in bulk, scrape it, or run automated lookups;
- try to break, overload or get around the security or the limits on the site;
- resell the data, or republish the vehicle details we get from CarJam, which are for looking up a plate and not for redistribution.
No guarantees, and limits on our liability
The site is free and is provided as it is. It may change, break or go away. To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss that comes from using the site, relying on what's on it, or not being able to use it. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under New Zealand law that can't be excluded.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We'll update the date at the top, and say so on the site if the change matters. If you keep using the site after that, you accept the new terms.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and New Zealand courts decide any dispute about them.
Contact
Use the Report This Entry link on any plate page and say it's a request about the site or your account. A reviewer will pass it on.
